Drug Overview
GILTUSS® is a cough and cold medication that is alcohol-free, sugar-free, and dye-free. It is designed to temporarily relieve cough caused by minor throat and bronchial irritation, which can occur with the common cold or from inhaled irritants. Additionally, GILTUSS® helps loosen phlegm (mucus) and thin bronchial secretions, making your cough more productive. It also provides relief from nasal congestion, chest congestion, and sinus pressure, helping you feel more comfortable when you're under the weather.
Uses
If you're dealing with a cough caused by minor throat and bronchial irritation, such as what you might experience with a common cold or from inhaling irritants, this medication can help provide temporary relief. It works by loosening phlegm (mucus) and thinning bronchial secretions, making your cough more productive.
Additionally, if you're experiencing nasal congestion due to a cold, this medication can also help relieve that discomfort. It's designed to make you feel more comfortable while you recover.
Dosage and Administration
When using this medication, it's important to follow the recommended dosage carefully. For adults and children aged 12 years and older, you should take 5 milliliters (mL) every 4 hours. If you're giving this medication to children between the ages of 6 and 12, the dose is 2.5 mL every 4 hours. For younger children, specifically those aged 2 to 6 years, the dose is 1.25 mL every 4 hours.
If your child is under 2 years old, it's best to consult a doctor before administering the medication. Remember not to exceed 6 doses in any 24-hour period, and always use the dosing cup provided with the product to ensure accuracy. Following these guidelines will help you use the medication safely and effectively.
What to Avoid
You should avoid using this product if you are currently taking a prescription monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI), which are medications often prescribed for depression, psychiatric conditions, or Parkinson's disease. Additionally, do not use this product for at least two weeks after stopping an MAOI. If you're unsure whether your prescription includes an MAOI, it's important to consult with your doctor or pharmacist before using this product.
Taking this precaution is crucial to prevent serious interactions and ensure your safety. Always prioritize your health by seeking professional advice when in doubt.
Side Effects
You should be aware of some potential side effects when using this medication. If you experience nervousness, dizziness, or sleeplessness, it's important to stop using the product and consult your doctor. Additionally, if your symptoms do not improve within 7 days, or if they are accompanied by a fever, or if your cough lasts more than 7 days, returns, or occurs with fever, rash, or a persistent headache, these could indicate a more serious condition that requires medical attention.
