Drug Overview
Dextromethorphan HBr is a cough suppressant that helps relieve severe congestion and cough. It works by loosening phlegm (mucus) and thinning bronchial secretions, making it easier to clear mucus from your airways. This medication temporarily alleviates cough caused by minor throat and bronchial irritation, which can occur with the common cold or from inhaled irritants. It also helps reduce the urge to cough, allowing you to sleep better, and provides relief from nasal congestion associated with colds.
This product is suitable for individuals aged 12 and over and is designed to control cough and clear both nasal and chest congestion effectively.
Uses
This medication is designed to help you breathe easier by loosening phlegm (mucus) and thinning bronchial secretions. This action helps clear out bothersome mucus from your bronchial passageways, making your coughs more productive.
You can also use this medication to temporarily relieve coughs caused by minor throat and bronchial irritation, which can happen with the common cold or from inhaling irritants. It can reduce the intensity of your cough and help control the urge to cough, making it easier for you to get to sleep. Additionally, it can help relieve nasal congestion associated with a cold.
Dosage and Administration
It's important to follow the correct dosage when using this medication to ensure your safety and effectiveness. For adults and children aged 12 years and older, you should take 20 mL using the dosing cup provided every 4 hours. Make sure to shake the bottle well before each use to mix the medication properly.
Remember, you should not take more than 6 doses within a 24-hour period. Always use the dosing cup that comes with the medication, as using any other device could lead to incorrect dosing. If you have children under 12 years of age, this medication is not recommended for them. Keep the dosing cup with the medication to ensure you have it on hand each time you need to measure your dose.
What to Avoid
You should avoid using this product if you are currently taking a prescription monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI), which is a type of medication used for depression, psychiatric conditions, or Parkinson's disease. Additionally, you should not use it for at least two weeks after stopping an MAOI. If you're unsure whether your medication contains an MAOI, please consult your doctor or pharmacist before using this product.
This product is also not suitable for children under 12 years of age. Always follow the recommended dosage and do not exceed the directed amount.
Side Effects
If you experience nervousness, dizziness, or trouble sleeping while using this medication, it's important to stop taking it and consult your doctor. Additionally, if your symptoms do not improve within 7 days, or if they are accompanied by a fever, you should seek medical advice. A returning cough, especially if it comes with fever, rash, or a persistent headache, may indicate a more serious condition that requires attention.
Warnings and Precautions
You should not use this medication if you are currently taking a prescription monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI), which is a type of drug used for depression or certain other conditions, or if you have stopped taking an MAOI within the last two weeks. Additionally, this product is not suitable for children under 12 years of age.
Before using this medication, it’s important to consult your doctor if you have any of the following conditions: heart disease, thyroid disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, difficulty urinating due to an enlarged prostate, or a persistent cough related to smoking, asthma, chronic bronchitis, or emphysema.
